Disposable Holiday Table Setting | @thefauxmartha

There might have been a time or two when you’ve wondered why I call myself the faux. Well, wonder no longer. Here’s an idea! We’re setting a disposable table for the holidays this year. Some may call it a major faux pas. I’m not even embarrassed about it. The idea came to me while at Ikea. A craft paper holder filled with a roll of paper was sitting on top of a dining table. I wanted to run home immediately (see video for visual reference) and affix it to the underneath side of our table. I’d cover the table in a new roll of paper everyday. Kind of like the exam table at the doctors office. Hallie would color and spill all over it. And I’d be happy about it. I nixed the permanence of the roll. It’ll fit in our buffet just fine, and we wont lose knee-space at the table. However, we’ll still be covering our table in craft paper and using disposable plates and silverware come Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. Because we have a tiny toddler and I want her to enjoy it as much as the rest of us. Do I even need to mention how great clean-up will be two days out of the year?!  Read more

Thanksgiving from scratch | @thefauxmartha

Before I say Happy Thanksgiving, I wanted to leave you with my made from scratch Thanksgiving menu. Don’t skip the White Wine Gravy, Cranberry Walnut Stuffing, or the Maple Pumpkin Pie. Hallmarks! I’ve included make ahead instructions when possible. To pull this off, I recommend creating a schedule for both the preparation and the oven. Finally, read through the recipes a couple times a day or so in advance to familiarize yourself. It’s kind of like studying for a test except way more fun, and you can bring all your notes. Read more

White Wine Gravy | @thefauxmartha

If there’s an underdog or an afterthought on the Thanksgiving table, it’s the gravy—the very last thing to make before sitting down to eat. The table-setting, turkey-carving, side dish-reheating, and drink-pouring fill center stage, encroaching on the gravy making time. If it weren’t for that fact that it mingles with nearly everything on the plate, I’d let it take a natural back seat. But alas, it’s the icing on the cake. Give me 10 minutes and a bottle of wine. You’ll thank me. It is the season of Thanksgiving after all. Read more

Cranberry Walnut Stuffing | @thefauxmartha

I’ll never forget my first married Thanksgiving. We were young and poor and far away from family.  I was determined to make my first Thanksgiving entirely from scratch. I took the liberty to nix certain staples off the menu and add some new ones. I cleaned, brined, and cooked the turkey all by myself. I was proud, so proud, until Kev saw the final spread. Read more

Squash Kale Autumn Salad | The Fauxmartha

In his hurriedness to get off to work, I noticed Kev took the time to throw away my used coffee filter hanging off the side of the Chemex. Meanwhile, I sat at the dining room table, drinking the cup of coffee that filter had produced. It was a rare glimpse. I’m usually the one in the kitchen or on the floor corralling the babe. Thank you, I said. He said you’re welcome like it was no big deal, like he does it all the time. I often throw it away, he said. I paused, took another sip, and tried to remember the last time I threw it away. Thank you, I said again. Read more

Pear Almond Galette | The Fauxmartha

I made a similar Pear Almond Galette for Thanksgiving. Or should I call it Almond Pear Galette? I can’t decide. Either way it was simple yet beautiful, nearly elegant, with only a couple ingredients. (Simplicity is prime these days.) By the cover, it was a sure winner. But you know what they say—don’t judge a book by its … they were right. Read more

Maple Pumpkin Pie | The Fauxmartha

I sat down to write this post last night. I wanted it to exude thankfulness in light of the upcoming holiday and this here pie. But I was far from feeling thankful last night. After a long day of 20 minute catnaps with a cranky babe, I thought I’d hand her over to Kev as soon as he walked in the door. After 5 minutes at home, he was called in. Dang. I forgot he was on call.
