DIY Wooden Ornaments from The Faux Martha

We’ve always kept our Christmas tree simple with colorful ball ornaments. They appease my need for simplicity, Hal’s need for color, and Kev’s need, well, he doesn’t have many needs in regards to all this hubbub. While the jingles jingle over the speakers, we decorate the whole house within a couple hours. It all comes down just as easily. There’s a lightness and a brightness to the look of it all, to the ease of it all. Of course, that stands in stark contrast to the very hard parts about this season, which is why I try to keep this side of things simple. Simple like these DIY Nordic Wooden Ornaments we added to the tree this year.  Read more

It’s finally come time to start sharing the Pinch of Yum Studio design (!!). If you’re wondering what I’m talking about, you can catch up with this post from August. Design is a whole lot of talking about design, like months of it, and all of a sudden it just takes shape overnight, which is what is happening right now. As I type, the drills are drilling along to Michael Bublé and Adele in the background. The IKEA kitchen is going in. (Not by my hands, though I’ve put together my fair share of IKEA projects for the studio, a favorite pastime of mine.) I’m excited to share the final reveal next month. But before we jump straight to the finale, I’m sharing the Pinch of Yum office renderings today. (NOTE: all sources and details will be posted in the final reveal posts.) Read more

how to add a pantry from the faux martha

We’re back to the rhythm of the school year, a rhythm I’ve come to crave. We really let things go this summer—from cleaning to meal planning to using a calendar. I’m itchy to get things back into normal working order, mostly so life works. Maybe you’re rowing down the same stream? If so, it may be a good time to take a look at the pantry, whether you need a little tidying up or some major help. My mantra: Handle the things within your control so you have the bandwidth for the rest. Let’s handle the pantry. Over the next two weeks, I’m focusing specfically on the pantry, answering some great common questions that came out of The Minimalist Kitchen Course earlier this year. First up (today)—how to add a pantry to your kitchen without a remodel. Next—how to make an organizational plan for your pantry, working with a real-life pantry. Finally—a real-life pantry makeover and reveal. Read more

Pinch of Yum Studio BEFORE

This summer I’ve been doing a lot of work offline. And I sorta love it, the cadence and pace and quietness of it all. I’ve carved out space to create and think, a space without double taps and stats and algorithms. I’ve jumped off the hamster wheel of hustle, too, a wheel I used to do a lot of spinning in. I don’t sorta love it. I love, love it. As someone who makes her living online, this makes for a muddy reality. Though, I think these two worlds can coexist with each other—online and offline—as long as I pay close attention to the ratios I give each of those spaces, as well as the places I go to get refueled. One of those offline spaces I’ve been working in this summer is the new Pinch of Yum Studio, helping to design the interior of their workspace. It’s a project that makes me feel my heart beat, a project that makes me feel alive. I’d love to share it with you.  Read more

Neutral Nordic Wallpaper from The Faux Martha

Wallpaper. Rugs. Wall art. Curtains. These are the things that make designing a space so debilitating, especially wallpaper. It’s more permanent than a nail hole. But a neutral Nordic wallpaper is neutral enough to allow your tastes to change over the years and playful enough to add some light-hearted personality and pattern to your space. I rounded up some of my favorite neutral Nordic wallpapers to make your wallpaper search a little lighter, two of which are in our mudroom (pictured) and dining roomRead more

Chambray work uniform from The Faux Martha

I have a work uniform. Maybe you’ve noticed? And since I work from home, it’s my around-the-house and out-of-the-house uniform too. Chambray every single day is my mantra. “Mel, shouldn’t you consider another fabric?” Kev says as I pick up yet another chambray top. I said the same thing to Kev a couple months into dating about the color of his clothes. He only knew the color blue. I resonate with that boy now. Read more

Waterhog from LLBean from The Faux Martha

You know you’re getting old when you start telling everyone how much you love the doormats at your front and back door. When you hold a spot on Valentine’s Day, a day for declaring love, to wax on about these mats. When you write a “poem” titled: Ode to the Waterhog. There’s no going back from here. Last year I went on a hunt to find an industrial-strength doormat that didn’t also scream industrial. Our wood floors were taking a hit during the wet months of the year, as were our rugs. The floors were always damp, and the rugs were always dirty. Enter the waterhog. Love is in the air and on the floor. Read more

An edible thanksgiving centerpiece from The Faux Martha

If we could redesign the calendar, I’d advocate to spread out all the holidays crammed into the last 2 months of the year. (I’d also advocate to move the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, right next to each other on the calendar and decrease the traditional 8-hour work day. But that’s beside the point.) The end of the year is loaded with the biggest, most anxiety-provoking holidays. I always get twitchy this time of year, the most wonderful time of the year. With only two full weeks until Thanksgiving, the twitch is extra twitchy. And then I remind myself again of the US Navy principle—KISS. Read more
