Winter Pesto | The Fauxmartha

They say there’s blizzard-like conditions coming to the northeast on Friday. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. For ending work early. Warming up to a mug of hot chocolate. And making every excuse to stay inside under a blanket. We’ll make homemade pizza just like we always do on Friday nights. Skipping the tomato sauce for leftover winter pesto this time. And rent a couple Red Box movies. At least that’s how I envision it.  Read more

Whole Wheat Waffles | The Fauxmartha

Sunday morning. It’s quiet and overcast. The perfect light for photographing these whole wheat waffles. The Civil Wars are playing in the background from the speakers of Kev’s computer. Nothing fancy. $3 fresh flowers from the store sit on the messy table that needs to be cleaned. Something about it all reminds me, winter is just a season. The fog will soon lift. And the streets will bustle with activity and noise. But the quiet, that awkward, revealing sound I so often avoid, is majestic right now. Read more

The turkey’s in the oven filled with cranberry walnut stuffing. I snuck in some kale. Shhh, don’t tell. The green bean casserole is prepped. Cranberries are crackling on the stove. The rolls are rising. And my dad is smoking the other turkey outside in the Texas snow. You read that right. Texas snow! It’s a Christmas miracle no doubt.  Read more

When you need only a small amount of whipped cream, but don’t want to pull out the mixer and make a big batch (and mess)…use your immersion blender! Pour your whipping cream (1 cup or less) into a 4 cup measuring cup, and use immersion blender to whip cream until thickened. Add sugar and vanilla extract if needed. Half the time, half the clean up and no wasted whipping cream!

We made it to Maryland late last night after a 40 mile detour and 15 minutes of stopage time. Our GPS froze and a light went out on the back of our car. A nice cop let us know. Did I mention Starbucks closed 5 minutes before closing time. It was a long night. But at 2 am we pulled up to my grandmas house. She greeted us with curlers fresh out of her hair and a sandwich and cookies. I can only hope to be half the woman she is at 80. Read more

The last couple weeks I’ve been running around like a crazy lady. With my hair frazzled and head spinning. The deadlines are piling up and the holidays are quickly, too quickly, approaching. I’m currently sitting at my computer, writing a post, eating breakfast, and putting on make-up. Frazzled. Too frazzled. Read more

My mom’s in town for the week. We’ve been eating well. Very well. Drinking plenty of glasses of wine and sharing stories we’ve probably told a million times. They’re stories that make our family unique. Stories about my brother chasing my sister down the beach declaring, “sweet revenge,” with a plastic sword in his hand. Stories of sitting in ant piles and falling off my scooter. My dad picked every last pebble out of my knee. Stories of listening to my Big Bird tape player sing “I wanna go home” over and over again. Stories that no one else quite understands except my family. They’re ours. Read more
