This cake goes out to the broken-hearted, the star-crossed lovers, and the happily ever afters. It goes out to the Valentines and the Galentines. And to the person who’s been hoping that brownies and chocolate cake would finally make a baby. (They did!) It goes out to the person looking to use up extra wine (though I’ve never been that person). Are you out there? Extra and wine rarely make it into the same sentence around here, unless I call my neighbor and say, “Hey, do you have any extra wine?” Read more

Hygge | @thefauxmartha

I love Minnesota winters with all of my being. I jump at the first snowfall and mourn the last. The snow, the snow blowing, the cold air hitting my lungs, the evergreens, the quietness, the sledding—they make my heart beat. But with this beloved season comes the shortest days, the greyest afternoons, the darkest evenings, and the coldest cold. Whether you love this season or not, winter can always use a touch of this Danish thing called hygge (hoo-ga or hue-ga). (Scroll to the end of the post for a giveaway.) Read more

bittersweet black cookies copycat rustica from the faux martha

Writing isn’t coming easily to me these days between the general anxieties of starting a new year, the political climate, my friend’s meeting and losing their baby, and Kev saying goodbye to his grandma—all held within the capsule of a month. This mighty big pill is currently lodged in my mind, leaving me with crumbs of insistent thoughts that will find no other way out except out (or swallowed). So today, even if only for myself, I need to couch the weight of these thoughts inside lofty, bittersweet black cookies and get them out. Read more

Tart Cherry Almond Baked Oatmeal | @thefauxmartha

On Saturday mornings we have this unspoken rule that breakfast must come out of the oven, the waffle iron, or the cast iron griddle. Though sometimes it comes out of the car. Kev and Hal pick up donuts for themselves and a croissant for me. Special is the name of our weekend breakfast game. Read more

Minimalist Pantry 2.0 | @thefauxmartha

Last year I did a major pantry overhaul. It was a disaster prior. I shared the before (close your eyes) and after, along with 7 tips to building a minimalist pantry. It’s been a whole year, and we’ve stuck to it. We’ve made some improvements too. But before I get into those, check out the original post. For a comprehensive guide to creating and cooking in a minimalist kitchen, check out my cookbook, The Minimalist Kitchen, and take the in-depth course here.]

Tender Buttermilk Biscuits | @thefauxmartha

If you’ve been around here long, you know of my love for a good biscuit. There is no such thing as too many biscuit recipes (even for a minimalist like myself). There’s a time for flaky layered biscuits and a time for tender buttermilk biscuits. I’ve only just figured out the latter.

This year, we hosted a southern-style Christmas day brunch with our neighbors. I made it my goal to figure out how to make a tender, melt-in-your-mouth biscuit, the kind of biscuit I imagine my mom’s late dad made for her growing up.  Read more

2016 Last Minute Gift Guide | @thefauxmartha

It’s annual Gift Guide time. In true fashion, it’s last minute and preceeded by a post professing my Grinchy-ness about the over abundance of this holiday. It usually takes making these gift guides for me to get in the spirit of giving thoughtfully and minimally. This year, we have gift guides for the person who works from home, the coffee lover, the dinner maker, and the threenager. I’ve placed an asterik* next to all the things we own. (They’re tested and loved!) For more ideas, check out years past: 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012 and Edible Gifts (add Homemade Nutella and Molly’s Chocolate Halva Spread to the list too).  Read more

There’s fresh garland running down the stairs. It smells like cedar and pine. The fire is roaring, and the ground is covered by a thick layer of fluffy snow. The cacophony of shovels against the concrete is music to my ears. It’s my favorite time of year besides the craze, high expectations, and excess of Christmas. The start of winter makes me feel alive, and Christmas gives me the hives. Read more
