Into a microwave safe bowl, add 1/2 cup of water. Cut a lemon in half, squeezing the juice into the water. Drop the two halves into the water. Place in the microwave, and heat on high for 3 minutes. Let it stand for another 5 minutes. Don’t be tempted to open the door. When the timer goes off, use a dry towel to clean up the mess. (For step-by-step images, click here.)

What a simple and easy way to clean a microwave oven! I am really impressed and will definitely try this cleaning method! Thanks for sharing! St Johns Wood Carpet Cleaners Ltd.
I am doing this. Today. Our microwave is disgusting and I’ve never really been sure how to clean it properly… Thank you – SUCH a useful tip. I love this column.
Thank you! I did not know about using lemon. That’s a good idea! I will buy lemons to try it! I’ve only done it heating the water for 3-5 minutes. My question is…my microwave is black (color, not dirt). How do I clean the glass part on the outside and the inside? While on the subject…will you or do you have a tip about cleaning oven glass too? I have a self cleaning oven but it bugs me I can’t do the glass. Thank you. I’m new to your Facebook page and like it very much!
As for the microwave, I cleaned the inside glass just as the tip mentioned. I cleaned the outside with kitchen cleaner. Worked like a charm. In the past, I’ve cleaned the inside with regular kitchen cleaner too.
Thank you for this tip

Well, that’s weird. I responded right after you posted this and it’s not here. Sorry! I came back to send you over to The Kitchn for a tip they had about cleaning ovens: http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-clean-an-oven-cleaning-lessons-from-the-kitchn-201191
