Ingredients
- 1/4 c. organic ketchup
- 1/4 c. white wine vinegar
- 1/4 c. onion, lightly chopped
- 3 tbsp. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. paprika
- 1/2 tsp. worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 c. canola oil (or other mild tasting oil)
- salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Place the first 6 ingredients in a food processor or hi-powered blender (Vitamix). Puree until smooth.
- Slowly add in the canola oil and continue to blend until emulsified or smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
- Use or store in refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. Leftover jam jars make great dressing containers. Shake well before serving.
Too much sugar and way too much oil.
I have moved to Australia, they don’t sell Catalina dressing here, and I use it in a number of salads. I’m so excited I can make this on my own I could cry! Going to go and make it right now!
I adore that your husband ate his taco salads with catalina, we did too growing up and everyone looks at me funny when we say it! I actually made this last week (for taco salad!) from a similar recipe, it is pretty close to the real thing, your recipie looks a touch better! Love your blog!
I absolutely relate to your comment that your husband didn’t necessarily ask for the dressing to be homemade, but you did it anyway. Food is so much more satisfying to make when made from scratch!
This looks so tasty! Love your blog. I’ve been following for a while but I don’t think I’ve commented before. The photos make the food look yummy. Just to let you know, I’ve nominated you for Food Stories Award for Excellence in Storytelling . 😉

Thank you, thank you for your kind words!
You are most welcome and deserving.
Love your homemade dressing!
GOOD to know! I only eat Catalina dressing on the occasional taco salad so I hate buying a whole bottle and forgetting about it, I’m definitely trying this one!
I am definitely going to try this recipe. The only dressing I’ve ever made from scratch is vinegar and oil. I never really thought about making my own dressing for taco salad. Thanks! Beautiful photos, too!
You have been awarded the “One Lovely Blog” award! You can pick it up on my blog at http://www.spoonfeast.com
Congratulations!
Amazing photos! Will have to give this one a try!
I thought the taco salad and Catalina dressing combo was a thing my dad made up -haha. Guess not! Homemade dressing always trumps store bought. Thx for the recipe!
I totally know that feeling. I always thought my mom invented peach cobbler 🙂
I’m really tankfull that I discovered your blog, it’s amazing!
I think I share the same anal-ness you’re talking about with making things from scratch. It usually starts with, “challenge accepted”.
This looks SO good, and I would go for this over Kraft ANY day. Bookmarking this for future marinades. Yum! [:
Sounds amazing, Melissa! I love homemade dressings so much more than store-bought. Beautiful photos!!
OMG. I love this.
Haven’t thought about this dressing for years! Love this homemade recipe. Yum!
Love this! It’s so good on taco salad. Yum!
Looking forward to trying this dressing – you are the best!
I love all the flavours in this dressing, I can see why it’s such a favourite of his!
Goodness, I haven’t thought of that dressing in years. Never would have thought to put it on a taco salad. Your photos are so good I’ll have to give it a try.
Wow! Does that bring back memories. It’s good to know there is a better alternative! Thanks for this. It sounds delicious.
This is one of my favorite dressings! It never occurred to me to try to make it!!
I am so glad you posted this. I am catering a party friday and the client asked for this dressing. I had no idea how to make but of course I said yes!
I like the way you think! Hope the party went well!
I don’t know that I’ve ever tried Catalina dressing. It sounds really good!
