Did you make that frittata in your cast iron skillet, and now you’re wondering how to clean it without pulling out the soap that you know you shouldn’t use? Skip the soap and give your skillet a facial. Sprinkle liberally with kosher salt and scrub with a wet paper towel. Repeat until clean. Lightly rub with oil afterwards.

A preventative though that changed my life with cast iron cooking: the no-stick-trick. Always always always heat the cast iron up before adding anything. And once it is nice and hot, add your fat of choice. The other preventative I love is the seasoning of the pan. After every use I wash with a sponge and no soap, then heat it until dry then add coconut oil (a teaspoon or less) and swish around with my designated cast-iron-seasoning rag. Let it cool and hang it up.
This is my first time visiting your blog and I’m excited to be here!
So glad you stopped by! Thanks for all the other cast iron tips. There’s so much to know about these pans. I’d love to share your heat up tip and link back to you if you’re up for it.
oops. I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to use soap. That’s what I’ve been using this whole time! I have noticed some splotchy parts on my pan as a result. oops oops. Thanks for this tip. I’ll be sure to right my ways/
YES!!!!!! I literally just learned this trick two days ago and I am not joking when I say it’s been life changing. I was thisclose to buying new skillets because I couldn’t get them clean, but then I took the salt scrub to all of my caked up pans and they look good as new. Whod’a thought?
I never knew that trick! Now I just need a cast iron skillet… I mean, now that I know how to clean it properly and everything, surely that’s a good enough reason to add to my collection of kitchen paraphernalia… 🙂
I love this trick.
