What do you get when you cross a pregnant donut lover with a craft blogger over at The Proper Pinwheel? A surprise baby shower with baked donut holes on a DIYed pinwheel. Myself along with a bunch of my favorite craft bloggers are having a virtual baby shower today to celebrate Lexy and her sweet baby girl on the way. If all goes as planned, Lexy and I will have our littles only a week or so apart. They’ll soon become best friends after we move to Denver next summer (fingers triple crossed).
As I mentioned, Lexy loves donuts.
She’s also a wicked good DIY craft blogger, so I had to kick these donuts up a notch and add some DIY action to the them. A custom pinwheel seemed all too necessary (free download at the bottom of the post). You see, in another life, I’d like to be a faux craft blogger. I actually read more craft and home DIY blogs on a daily basis than I read food blogs. (Check here for some of my faves.) Shame on me. Don’t tell. The graphic designer side of me loves crafts. You should see the baby’s room right now. It’s a bunch of half finished projects. Let’s hope she keeps cooking till they’re complete.
I used my basic baked donut recipe to make these “holes” which are really more muffin-shaped than they are round. PS—do they make a donut hole pan yet? Someone needs to get on that if not.
Half the batch got a nice roll in cinnamon sugar.
While the other half got a healthy dusting of powdered sugar.
Then they found their way onto a pinwheel skewer, separated by flavor. Feel free to cross pollenate your donut holes. I’m just anal and prefer my flavors not to mix. I was one of those kids.
In a small bowl, mix together milk and vinegar. Allow to sit for about 5 minutes to curdle. Melt butter in a small bowl and set aside to cool.
Meanwhile, whisk together flours, baking powder, sea salt, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Set aside.
Into the cooled butter, whisk in sugar, honey, egg, and vanilla bean seeds until evenly combined. Add in curdled milk. Side note, dip honey measuring utensil in the melted butter first for easy honey removal.
Whisk together wet and dry ingredients until just combined. Over-mixing will create a dense donut.
Spray mini muffin tin pan. Evenly distribute batter.
Bake for 9 minutes. Allow to cool at least 1 minute before removing from tin and placing on a cooling rack to cool completely.
Meanwhile, make topping. Melt butter. In a small bowl, mix together cinnamon and sugar. In a separate bowl, add in powdered sugar.
Dip each donut hole in butter before either coating in the cinnamon/sugar mixture or powdered sugar mixture (10 of each). Place back on cooling rack until dried. Best served same day. If storing leftovers, lightly cover.
