I made Kevin pinky promise we’d always have a gas stove. Our current apartment has an electric stove. I learned quickly: if you’re used to cooking with gas, turn the heat off 2-3 minutes before you’re finished cooking to keep things from overcooking or worse, burning (unless you have plenty of open burners or hot pads to remove the pan from the heat).

Ugh, yes – electric stoves are kind of terrible. I never realized it until I came home after cooking at college with my gas burners. Everything burns! And it’s so hard to tell how hot it is while you’re cooking. Good tip.
i had to make the switch to electric too when i moved out here! what is up with that! oyoyoy. we’ve left it on accidentally so many times :-/ this tip will surely help with that though!
I’ve found if using one of the flat-top ceramic stoves they also take a lot longer to heat up the pan! And also noticed they take much longer to cool, like your say here! 🙂
HA! I totally made the hubby promise the same thing, then we moved to Sweden where it is almost impossible to find gas stoves (if you’re renting a house). I’m just glad we didn’t end up with inducted heating – shudder. Ditto to what you said, but I’ve also found that turning it off earlier and leaving food on the burner let’s it cook or keep warm longer (especially if its stews or something like that when overcooking isn’t an issue). I still miss gas, but I’ve learned to live with the electric for now.

Great tip, thanks! I just moved into a new apartment with an electric stove after years of cooking with gas and the struggle is TOO real.

I just moved into a house with an electric stove after having gas for 6 years! Can’t wait to change it out!
