Sun-dried Tomato Bowl | @thefauxmartha

It’s rhythmic. It’s predictable. Seven days a week, it’s the same song streaming in the background. As much as I want to hate it, I love it. Let’s be honest, I crave it. She craves it too. Hallie’s little 1-year-old body, always in search of a new adventure, craves the rhythm of everything else. The rhythm of breakfast, lunch, and dinnertime. Of naptime, though we can’t seem to hold a decent beat here. Of school time and bath time. The rhythm informs. It lets us know where we are and what’s coming next. The rhythm is a schedule begging to be filled in. Read more

Who first believed in you? Family members don’t count. For me, it was Mr. Serie. He was my 8th grade art teacher. Art was a 6-week elective then. Or was it 12-weeks? I can’t remember. But despite all my goofing off in the class, he pulled me aside and told me I was good at art. He didn’t have to do that. And I probably wasn’t all that good. But I went on to paint lots of pictures, take lots of art classes, and major in graphic design. All because Mr. Serie told me I was good at something. Words are powerful. Read more

One-pot Pantry Pasta | @thefauxmartha

I write about food. And dream about it too. Without saying it explicitly, I preach week in and out to make food from scratch. It’s better that way. But come 5:00 pm on a weeknight, I’m without a message to preach or an idea of what to make. Dinner’s hard. It’s even harder now that we have a tiny little person who needs to be in bed by the time we once started making it. Unlike the rest of our life, we kept dinner spontaneous because we could. Long-winded when we felt like it. It wasn’t a burden then. Read more

It’s the first official post of 2015, yet somehow we’re halfway through January already. I’ve yet to ditch a resolution, but maybe that’s because I never made any in the first place. I’ve been thinking about what you said, though (thanks for taking my survey). I feel like I need to take 10,000 steps back before going forward. Remember ninth grade public speaking class (or was it Seinfeld)? They told you to imagine the audience naked before delivering a speech to help ease the nerves.  Read more

Sweet Potato Taco Soup | The Fauxmartha

It’s that time of year when people gather in droves. Sweaters, Bing Crosby, bubbly drinks, and twinkly lights fill center stage. In the background, the haggard hostess dances around the kitchen for hours, prepping a meal for many—the ones she loves most. Near meal time, it’s inevitable. She questions the depth of her love due to the stress, sweat, and need for another shower.  Read more

Dessert is an afterthought for us during winter. By afterthought I mean—we think about it once it’s too late to make anything. It’s never forgotten. We usually ditch our always-at-the-ready ice cream until the weather warms, unless Talenti is on sale. In that case, we just turn up the heat. Lately though, I’ve been filling my little ice cream bowl with granola and dark chocolate chunks just before bed. I know something’s good when Kev follows suit. (He’s been following suit).  Read more

White Wine Gravy | @thefauxmartha

If there’s an underdog or an afterthought on the Thanksgiving table, it’s the gravy—the very last thing to make before sitting down to eat. The table-setting, turkey-carving, side dish-reheating, and drink-pouring fill center stage, encroaching on the gravy making time. If it weren’t for that fact that it mingles with nearly everything on the plate, I’d let it take a natural back seat. But alas, it’s the icing on the cake. Give me 10 minutes and a bottle of wine. You’ll thank me. It is the season of Thanksgiving after all. Read more
