Acorn Squash Enchilada Sauce | The Fauxmartha

When my grandparents came to visit as a kid, they’d always sleep in my room. I wouldn’t let my mom take the sheets off after they left. Their smell. I wanted it to last, and the sheets seemed to hold it the longest. I’d cry when it no longer smelled like them but rather me.  Read more

Lemon Garlic Cucumber Salad | The Fauxmartha

We’re squeezing in a thousand dates in 30 days, or however many days we have left as just the two of us. It’s new ground for us. We’ve never been the best at dating—the kind of dating that requires reservations and plans. We’re far too last minute and, truth be told, cheap. The cost of a date seems to add up quickly, where all I can seem to see are dollar signs above every doorstep. We’ve been on a grad school budget for too many years. I’m not sure that we’ll ever lose that mentality. Nor do I want to. Read more

Make Ahead Broccoli Kale Bake | The Fauxmartha

Don’t mind the boxes, packing tape, unkempt hair, and complete mess that sits behind this computer screen. By the end of the week, we will be moved into the new place. At least that’s the plan. But since nothing has gone quite as planned, I may still be sitting at this here desk come next week. Let’s pray that’s not the case. My sanity is about to walk out the door on me.  Read more

Ramp Ravioli | The Fauxmartha

I’ve never cooked with ramps until now. A year ago, we splurged and ate at Table 52 as we crossed off the final Chicago bucket list items before moving. I can’t remember exactly what we ordered, but I’ll never forget the ramp ravioli served with our dish, that and the hummingbird cake. I should mention, I’m not a fancy eater. Quite boring actually. Take me to a bakery, and I’ll take anything on the menu. But take me to a nice restaurant, and I’ll probably turn my picky nose up at half the menu items. It’s embarrassing. And I call myself a food blogger.  Read more

Sweet Pea Risotto | The Fauxmartha

It’s much harder to get things done these days. More often than not, I find myself one handed. My other arm is stuck in a new posture—curved and wrapped tightly around my growing belly. Ever since the kicks started, I havent been able to let go. Even as I type, my computer makes the tiniest of hops. She’s kicking it too. Read more

Sweet Potato Tacos | The Fauxmartha

I buy groceries, cook and eat three nutrient-rich meals a day, and do it all as involuntarily as my heart beats. I have plenty. More than plenty. And I take it for granted. I don’t think twice about adding more vegetables and fruits to my shopping cart. And lately more of the produce in my cart displays the organic sticker on its exterior, totaling my bill a little higher. I have plenty. But that’s not true of everyone—nearly 48.8 million Americans “lack the means to get enough nutritious food on a regular basis.” (source) Read more

Baked Sweet Potato Fries | @thefauxmartha

I’ve been craving bad things. Things I gave up years ago and promised myself I wouldn’t eat again. Things that always leave me full of regret and craving nutrient-rich food. I’m hoping this is a short phase of pregnancy. Because Pizza Hut pan pizzas and massive amounts of ice cream must end. Though moderate amounts of ice cream are welcome. Very welcome. That’s one thing I’ll never give up. Read more

Honey Orange Butter Wheat Rolls | The Fauxmartha

Easter is coming. Another big meal around the dinner table with friends and family.

Honey Orange Butter Wheat Rolls | The Fauxmartha

Chaos will ensue in the kitchen. There will be no time for homemade rolls. At least that’s what Mom says. Read more
