When it rains, it pours. Sometimes hard enough to make the window well in your basement swell to the point of flooding. Sometimes so hard it requires all the towels in the house. Only then do you reach for a roll of Bounty, the quicker picker upper, because that’s all that’s left. Sometimes it storms so loud, the electricity shudders, administering a final blow to the ancient hard drive in your computer. Sometimes the farmers market gets rained out, and the farmers call their weeks worth of produce, of income, a wash. Read more

No Boil Pasta Bake | @thefauxmartha

We’ve come to that point in our relationship where you’re either going to think I’m super cool or just plain lazy. Or maybe both. Lately, Kev’s been asking where are all those pasta bakes that I used to make. As if I’ve stuffed them into a box misplaced in the basement. “By the time I cook the noodles and make the sauce,” I said, “we might as well eat dinner rather than throwing it into another dish to bake even longer, another dish I have to clean. Also, have you heard her pre-dinner toddler grump?” But that got me thinking—I wonder if we can skip the whole boil-the-pasta part? If so, that might just give his beloved pasta bake a fighting chance around here. Peppery White Wine Pasta | @thefauxmartha

It’s strange how relationships go. When you first start dating, it works because it’s easy and spontaneous. And if it’s anything but, you end things real fast. Eight years into marriage—three of those years with a tiny human—it works because we work at it and because we add a weekly event to the calendar. “Hang out.” And in the event notes: “No iPhones allowed.” We’re officially old not young. Balsamic Pasta | @thefauxmartha

I had this whole post written about marriage. About how easy it was before we were parents. So easy we high-fived ourselves. And about how hard it’s been since becoming parents. It was about how this Balsamic Pasta (with a salad on top) saved us. A recipe I recreated from a dish we ordered on a much needed date night a couple months ago. I deleted it. Because I got to the end and realized it wasn’t the pasta dish, though so good and quick. You need to make it. It was the ping pong table from Craigslist that saved us.

4 ingredient marcella hazan pasta sauce from the fauxmartha

You know her as Naturally Ella. I know her as Erin, my business partner, my friend, the person I talk with most these days. Hallie knows her as “Enin!”. She hasn’t found her Rs yet. She also knows her as the author of The Easy Vegetarian Kitchen—the book she affectionately wrote notes in while her father wasn’t looking. The book that makes her new favorite meal—fried rice. In a few short weeks, one lucky little boy will know her as mama. Erin is having a baby (!), which is cause for a celebration sans wine. So a bunch of lovely people have gathered via the WWW to send Erin off into motherhood with quick and easy vegetarian recipes.  Read more

One-pot Pantry Pasta | @thefauxmartha

I write about food. And dream about it too. Without saying it explicitly, I preach week in and out to make food from scratch. It’s better that way. But come 5:00 pm on a weeknight, I’m without a message to preach or an idea of what to make. Dinner’s hard. It’s even harder now that we have a tiny little person who needs to be in bed by the time we once started making it. Unlike the rest of our life, we kept dinner spontaneous because we could. Long-winded when we felt like it. It wasn’t a burden then. Read more

Quick Summer Pasta | The Fauxmartha

I’m gonna miss summer dishes that come together in the time it takes water to boil and pasta to cook. Dishes that only involve a couple chops and stirs. Dishes that are best when left uncomplicated, like this one. I’m not even sure what to call it. Quick Summer Pasta will do. It’s served us well this summer, again and again and again. It’s almost too simple to post. Then again, that’s the beauty of it. (Speaking of beauty, read on for a chance to win a set of two pictured handmade linen dinner napkins from StitchNY.) Read more

Quick Pasta + Roasted Veggies | The Fauxmartha

Last week I was honored to share my Quick Pasta + Roasted Veggie recipe over at A Cup of Joe for her Quick Fall Pasta series. This was the first post I made and shot post-babe. It was also our first day alone. Just me and Hal. Kev was back at work for the first time in three weeks. I was nervous. Extremely nervous. We didn’t understand each other quite yet. Somehow I was able to make and shoot this before the screaming sirens went off. I’m not sure I could reproduce the same results again with her. I think she knew I needed a little boost of confidence that day. I still haven’t quite figured out the work from home and take care of the babe yet. Hallie usually wins. It’s a good thing she hands out smiles like they are going out of style. With that said, I’m off to read Joanna’s Work/Life/Balance posts. Joanna—you are my hero. Thanks for having me! Read more
