Be Crafty + Puppy Chow | The Fauxmartha

A couple weeks ago, I got the sheer honor to make treats for the Be Crafty Workshop, the coolest craft workshop this side of the Mississippi. Amanda and Jessica host one fine party, and I love nothing more than to make things with my hands. Basically, I had the time of my life (see picture below).

Amanda can style the dessert table in such a way that it’s almost too beautiful to eat. Almost. Everyone, including me, stared for a solid 10 minutes, then snapped a picture before eventually partaking. Jessica made magic out of grocery store flowers. Dessert table aside, we were there to make gift wrap, boxes, bags, and pom-poms. I may not be the best gift giver, as divulged in this Yahoo interview, but my packages will look mighty nice this year.

  • Yield: a cereal box worths

Description

My mother-in-law makes THE best puppy chow. It’s picture perfect and evenly coated every single time. You’re in luck, she gave me the OK to share her secrets. Get ready to dance.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 c. creamy peanut butter
  • 12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 12 oz. box Rice Chex*
  • 12 oz. box (about 4 cups) powdered sugar, plus more if needed

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, melt butter, peanut butter, and chocolate. Whisk to combine.
  2. In a large container (large enough to fit a box of cereal) with a fitted lid, add half of the rice chex with half of the chocolate mixture. Shake well to evenly coat.
  3. Add remaining chex and chocolate mixture. Repeat.
  4. Pour in about 2/3 of the powdered sugar. Shake what your momma gave you. Dance and shake some more.
  5. Take a peek inside. Very, very carefully take a thin spatula to the edge of the container to loosen nuggets. Don’t worry about getting all of them. Pour in remaining powdered sugar and continue to shake. Transition into dance mode. Keep going.
  6. Peek in to find the most perfectly coated puppy chow you ever did see. The powdered sugar should be fully absorbed. If the puppy chow is still a bit wet, add a little more powdered sugar at a time and repeat your dance moves.

Notes

Only Rice Chex will do. Crispix will crumble upon the shake/dance maneuver.
