This is not Mike’s Hard Lemonade. It’s Mel’s Hard Lemonade. It’s been making an appearance at 5:00 for some time now. With a smooth, round lemon flavor served in a wine glass, not a beer bottle, it’s elegant and classy and quick. Along with a glass, you’ll reach for your brimmed hat, linen pants, and wicker picnic basket. Or maybe you’ll just reach for the wooden spoon to stir together dinner. I usually (always) do the latter. At 5:00.

Prepping and planning dinner has forever been a problem at our house. I’ve tried meal planning, but it lasts as long as a resolution—a couple weeks. I’ve made lists in my phone with my neighbor. Themed meals! Taco Tuesday. Pizza Friday. Surely that would help the dinner cause. I haven’t referenced the list in weeks.

Do you remember studying Pavlov in psychology class? He conditioned a dog to salivate (and thus eat) after hearing the sound of a buzzer. It’s called a conditioned reflex. Being married to a psychologist, we mention this all the time. Well, maybe just me. It’s the only thing I remember from psychology class.

When the clock strikes 5, I run to the kitchen and pour a drink. Hard Lemonade the last couple of weeks. I know from reading the book If you Give a Mouse a Cookie that if you give a girl a drink, she’ll make dinner. I think Pavlov was on to something.

Dinner. Brought to you by Mel’s Hard Lemonade.
