For the perfect slice of cake, use a long, serrated knife (not a steak knife) and slowly cut straight down, skipping the urge to saw. This works even better on a chilled cake as the icing is firmer and will not drag down the side of the cake as you cut.

Very true ! Can I just add that if this is a layered cake and you want perfect looking layer for each slice, you should dip your knife in very hot water, quickly dry it and then cut the way you explained. Works perfectly !
And the best way to cut the perfect, cleanest brownie is to use a plastic knife. Even the cheap little disposable ones work great! Try it and you’ll never go back to cutting brownies any other way 🙂
Good tip – we cut Desmond’s 3-tier birthday cake last weekend and it was a challenge. I think the height of it made it hard to balance the slices and I had to watch out that the slices didn’t come crashing down. Have a great weekend!
