If you live in the U.S., you know what today is. The day those defaming political ads quit running on TV. Maybe today is a bit hopeful, but tomorrow—I’m counting on you. The recent days have been too dark.

In high school I painted. My schedule was filled with art classes. I liked it that way. We learned about complimentary colors—something I probably learned as a child but didn’t really understand. Complimentary colors are funny. They sit across from each other on the color wheel. Some may say they’re complete opposites. A couple weeks ago, we had friends over for the first time since moving to Connecticut. It was monumental. I had been putting it off for weeks. Things still felt a little out of place. My desk area was a disaster. And our kitchen still looked too tiny to prepare a meal for more than two. But we did it. We christened it. And now it feels like home. Read more

When your husband has been out of town all month, you make a bitchin’ bowl for dinner every night. It’s far better than the eggs and toast which usually fill that stark white dinner plate. And it’s ready in five minutes. And for just a second, it makes you forget that you’re alone in a condo fully dressed in Christmas garb at the end of January.

Three and a half years later. One semester to go. My husband is nearing the end of graduate school. At least the school part. He’s currently touring the country interviewing for internships. Connecticut. Maryland. Ohio. Michigan. Tennessee. Illinois (current home). Louisiana. Kentucky. Colorado. In one short month we’ll find out where we’re going. February 24. Match day.
