Butternut Kale Tamale Bake from The Faux Martha

I know, I know. I keep writing about it—the surprise factor of dinner. Or maybe I keep talking about it every other post on Instagram. We’re getting to that point in our relationship when I can’t remember what I’ve told you. But every day come 5, I’m shocked that it’s dinner time. Again. Didn’t I just finish cleaning last night’s dishes? I’ve tried meal planning, but since it’s not a permanent fixture in my calendar, it only takes a week or two to lose steam. And thinking about the whole week in advance gives me hives. I’m a one-day-at-a-time girl, which works quite well until 5:00 pm. Read more

Molly's Chocolate Halva | @thefauxmartha

It’s a Molly Mash-up! I took her Pimiento Cheese Babka recipe from her new book Molly on the Range. Deleted the pimiento cheese because I gave my mom a hard time about eating pimiento cheese sandwiches my whole life. (I can’t go back on my word now.) And added in Molly’s Chocolate Halva—a chocolate tahini spread (think fancy nutella). For the final Molly touch, I gave these buns a wash of liquid honey and sprinkled them with all the sprinkles. Molly makes food happy, which is why I’m still bummed I met her for the first time with only half a smile. Read more

Quick and Smooth Hummus | @thefauxmartha

I first started eating hummus in college while I was trying to tighten up my diet. Though, I had no real concept of the stuff other than it was the dip that tricked me into eating those overly dense “baby” carrots. Back then, I couldn’t have told you that hummus came from chickpeas. Or was it garbanzo beans? No, hominy. Hummus came from hominy. Those cans all sat side-by-side at Walmart, the only place to shop in my small college town, so it was no wonder I was confused.  Read more

Smoky Breakfast Sandwich | @thefauxmartha

“Mama, is it the weekend yet?” She starts asking on Tuesday. The withdrawals from having everyone together two days prior hits. “Mama, when will daddy be home?” “After work, Hal,” I repeat. At three years old, she knows the value of weekends—when dad’s home indefinitely, when everyone’s home together. She’s always her happiest then. Me too.  Read more

Homemade Areapas from The Faux Martha

This recipe came about because of a food truck turned tiny restaurant in Minneapolis—Hola Arepa. When we go out to dinner, it’s the only place I ever want to go. Kev likes a little more variety in his life. But I’m a minimalist. So I go on repeat with Steph and Lindsay because they feel the same way. I order an El Diablo cocktail followed by the Shredded Beef and Plantain Arepa. Every single time.  Read more

Cozy Modern Fireplace | @thefauxmartha

In the last month of construction, we nixed the fireplace in the living room to stay on budget. So the room, the first room you see when you walk into the house, looked like an afterthought. Or maybe it looked more like no thought. The picture above doesn’t do our random assortment of furniture justice, as we had already started clearing stuff out when I got this shot. But that TV stand, the one I rolled home from the alleys of Chicago, was the biggest eyesore. Maybe because I painted it bright light blue when we moved to Connecticut. Read more

Toddler Cakes + KitchenAid Mini Giveaway | @thefauxmartha

She climbs the big tall ladder at the park by herself now. And dresses herself as soon as she wakes up. Always in a dress, mostly pink. She insists on closing every door we encounter. I wince at the shut and pray no tiny fingers are hurt in the crossfire. She sneaks sips of my black coffee and talks about how she can drink wine with me when she’s older. She’s in the thick of every dinner conversation, takes flaky salt on her avocado slices, and steals all my cookbooks and baking supplies off to her own kitchen. (See giveaway below.) Read more
