Baked Blueberry Donuts | @thefauxmartha

“Take a step back. You’re standing too close,” I texted my mom. She sent me a picture of a painting she was working on, worried that she’d added too much detail to the foreground. It’s a line I’d learned from my art teachers over the years. I’d heard it so often, it involuntarily came out. “It looks fine. Just take a step back. You’re standing too close.” Read more

How to Host a Fancy Brunch | @thefauxmartha

Over the holidays, my siblings and siblings-in-law were all in one place for a brief second. You could call it a Christmas miracle. We pounced on the opportunity to have brunch together, a fancy one. I’m a plain white tee and jeans kinda girl, but every once in a blue moon, life calls for a shiny gathering with breakable dishes and real napkins, around a table almost too pretty to sit at. Almost. Here’s how we threw a fancy, picture-worthy brunch (video and bloopers included). Read more

Browned Butter Pumpkin Bread | The Fauxmartha

A couple weeks ago when it was still warm enough to make you sweat, we stopped by a lemonade stand on the corner of the street. We chatted with and met new neighbors. I was juggling a cup of lemonade and a nap-ready, wiggly baby while trying to keep four new names straight. (I’m abnormally good with faces but adversely awful with names.) A homeless woman walked up, put her change down on the table without hesitation, and walked away with a cup of lemonade in hand and a smile on her face. My mind was a thousand different places, but present enough to absorb that brief moment.

Pumpkin Scones | The Fauxmartha

My soon-to-be-neighbor Lucy asked how I come up with recipes. I told her I wish I could attribute it to my brilliantly creative mind. But alas, my mind is neither brilliant or creative when it comes to recipes. And let’s be honest, I’m kind of a Plain Jane when it comes to food. One really good (and simple) recipe far outweighs 10 interesting recipes in my book. Boring, Plain Jane, classic. Call me what you’d like. Read more

Baked Apple Cider Donuts | The Fauxmartha

I like round food. Pizza, baked donuts, biscuits. I guess I should clarify, I like round food with flour. Wheat flour if possible. I’ve passed this trait on to Hal (along with my stubbornness). Couldn’t some of my better qualities seep through to her?  The good news—meal times are rarely, if ever, a fight, as long as I get food on the table fast enough. In that case, she’s exactly like her dad. Food. Now. You can see how this is a problem for someone who likes to make everything from scratch. Read more

Quick Raspberry Jam | The Fauxmartha

I could write the story of our life based on google searches. Is it normal to change a newborn’s diaper 15 times a day? Why do newborns cry all the time? What is the climate like in Minneapolis? How long does it take to build a home? How long does it take a moving company to deliver your stuff? Where is the best biscuit in the Twin Cities? We landed at Sun Street Breads based on the aforementioned search a couple weekends after moving here. My biscuit, which was mighty good, came with a side of raspberry quick jam. A couple weeks later, I met Stephanie for lunch at The Buttered Tin. I can’t pass up a good biscuit, and they had a good biscuit on the menu. Once again, it came with a side of raspberry quick jam. Whatever this phenomenon was, I needed it for my weekend biscuits. Read more

Blackberry Thyme Muffins | The Fauxmartha

I’m back from the land of boxes (and no boxes for that matter)! Our belongings arrived much later than promised. We went nearly 3 weeks with just a couple suitcases and a baby sticking her finger in every uncovered outlet possible. The outlet covers were in the boxes, of course. We pouted and cried and got angry and felt sorry for ourselves. Then we realized we were just fine, in fact, more than fine. Read more

Weekend Biscuits with Wheat | The Fauxmartha

About a year ago, Kev asked if I could come up with a “less buttery” biscuit. I know, I  know. I can hear your gasps all the way over here. Why, WHY would you pull butter out of a biscuit? But in the name of compromise and making sure I could still make a tray of biscuits on Saturday morning for someone besides myself, I started hacking away at my old recipe. I didn’t delete all the butter. Please breathe already. Read more
